| Title | e-ntegrated Process Design: Bridging Research and Development | ||
| Abstract | One of the missions of
industrial research is not only to generate state-of-the-art knowledge in
some specific areas relevant to the underlying business, but also to transfer
this knowledge to the development arm in order to translate it into new
capabilities and, ultimately, added-value.
Using a design tool for the thermal
treatment of liquid foods containing particulates as an illustration,
we will discuss the opportunities opened by the new developments in computing
and communication technologies for industrial research. We will show that
it is now possible to provide in an efficient way to non-experts advanced
design and simulation capabilities based on the latest developments in
a number of fields that have been historically rather segregated (mechanical
engineering, chemical engineering, microbiology, computer science). |
